“It's hard to condense into a paragraph how much my Match experience taught me. On a professional level, my Match year provided incredible insight into structural and societal barriers to education - most of the students at the Middle School come from underserved communities in Boston, and the ability to be part of an institution committed to tackling the educational skills and resources gap was an immense privilege. Many of the structural barriers to education are similar to the barriers to healthcare in these communities, so my experience with Match was invaluable in being able to understand healthcare disparities in Boston. Lastly, on a personal level, the bonds I made with many Match students (both as a tutor and soccer coach) are some of the most precious relationships I have ever made. Watching these kids fail and succeed, laugh and cry, change and grow throughout the year was an immense privilege. I still keep in touch with many of them.”

"In college, I was very interested and active in service and non-profit work and knew that I wanted to spend the year before medical school challenging myself with an experience that would help others. Since Match is a one-year commitment, it works with the timeframe of a gap year for medical school. Match definitely proved the challenging experience I was looking for, but I also made amazing relationships with the rest of the Match Corps and the students I worked with. In terms of preparation for medical school, Match gives you a great experience to share about during interviews, but more importantly primes you for the hard work and empathy-driven work that is also found in a future in medicine.”

“As a pre-med graduate who had to take a year off before going to medical school, I chose to work at Match because I wanted to spend my gap year doing something non-medical. I could have done bench research or hospital work, but my love for teaching drove me to seek out the Match Corps position. Match was ideal for me because the Corps position matched my teaching skills/experience, their mantra that blended together high expectations with love (ie tough love) drew me in, and most of the students came from a community that I wanted to serve as a future physician. As a current medical student, I feel that Match has prepared me well for the challenges of medical school by sharpening my time-management, teamwork, and stress-handling skills. I absolutely loved my experience at Match, and I feel that my gap year was extremely meaningful and well spent."

“Since my time in Match Corps 7, I have moved on to medical school at Loyola University Chicago. While I have been busy with my studies, I have had the opportunity to travel to Belize to provide health care to prison inmates and to study Spanish in Guatemala. I am currently in my second year of school and still deciding which specialty I would like to pursue, although I am leaning toward orthopedic surgery. I have been able to utilize skills that I refined in Match Corps while working with patients, and love to check in on my former students!”
